Mortgage insurance cover? - mortgage protection cover

I am in the process of obtaining a mortgage and I'm a little confused by the different health insurance market to me. I'm just starting, and critical illness cover Bupa life is great, but what about income protection? Am I right in thinking that if I do I wouldnt imcome protection against serious diseases? And if the life insurance - it is a cover which the death or specific, such as traffic accidents covers or eaten by a dog? "I'm really lost and would feedack.
